GOLEM metamorphosis | Vernon Gallery | 30 May-3 August 2012

Vernon Gallery is presenting the work of artists from Israel who have taken a deeper look at the symbolism of the ‘Golem’ in the Czech Republic.
The exhibition, titled ‘GOLEM metamorphosis’, will be held from 30 May to 3 August 2012 at Vernon Gallery. It focuses on Israeli artists and a selection of their work devoted to the Golem theme.
The exhibition’s gala opening will take place on 29 May starting at 7 pm at Vernon Gallery (U Průhonu 22, Prague 7).
The exhibition is part of an artistic project under way in the Czech Republic. On residencies in Prague, Hoštec and Malešov a group of Israeli artists are creating sculptures, paintings, and photographs inspired by the Prague Golem. The artists’ visit also coincides with the preparation period for the TINA B. Contemporary Art Festival 2012, which will take place in Prague from 17 October to 31 October 2012, and the development of the Sculpture Park project, which endeavours to bring art to the people and place installations in the public space.
The indoor and outdoor multidiscipliary projects are based on sculptural forms and fine art. They are complemented by installations and live performances that reflect the existence of the Golem. The mystical phenomenon of the Golem, based on Prague history and Jewish tradition, is transformed and studied in unorthodox ways and understood with the aid of a new language that helps to uncover and express its new meanings.
The project presents a new – updated – interpretation of the ‘Golem’ in today’s world. The Golem represents some kind of infinite power, a supernatural force that can both create and destroy. The artists confront acts that provoke war and hatred with a Golem created to solve problems, to protect, and to invoke a positive approach to transformation. The meaning of the Golem can be interpreted both as a negative and a positive form of change. That is the definition of transformation. The Golem is supposed to protect, but it caused a revolution.

Frank KOČÍ: Memories - Pre-opening 7 August 2012 at 6pm

An exhibition titled Memorieswill present a selection of work by Frank Kočí, an artist who was born in Czechoslovakia and worked in San Francisco. Although Frank Kočí painted more than 2,000 works, he went unnoticed in the art world. His work is now being exhibited at Vernon Gallery in a show that will run from 8 August to 15 September 2012.
The pre-opening of the exhibition will take place on 7 August at 6pm. The gallery is open from Wednesdays to Saturdays between 1pm and 6:30pm. Admission is free.
‘Art isn’t about infinite harmony with the world, but about the infinite joy and sadness emanating from one's experience.’- Frank Kočí
BIO of artist
Frank Kočí (1904-1983) was a very active street painter in San Francisco. Heleft his native Czechoslovakia in 1921 when he was 17 years old. He decided to seek fortune and happiness in the United States, where he found work as a night guard in Hollywood movie art studios. There he managed to get into an art department and gain access to paint, and then he began to make his first paintings.
The faces in his images gaze back at the viewer with a disarming intensity. Kočí came back to his native Czechoslovakia in his works capturing polite Czech gentlemen with moustaches, which he remembered from his childhood. Most of Kočí’s work focused on the inhabitants of North Beach and on visitors walking through the streets. His works very often feature a downcast, hungry man.
The exhibition is curated by Monika BurianJourdan, director of the gallery.
While documenting the works of Frank Kočí, a 16 mm film was discovered that reflects his life. Statements from friends and collectors have also been collected: http://vimeo.com/19574978

Katja Loher - MUBE, Brasil - Interplanetary Constellation 2012

MuBE, Museum Brasileiro da Escultura, is pleased to present “Interplanetary Constellation 2012”, Katja Loher’s first solo show on the continent of South America. New York-based Swiss video artist Katja Loher (b. 1979) belongs to a new generation of innovators and has taken video sculpture to a new level. The exhibition will be held at MuBE from 11 August to 29 August 2012 and it is curated by Monika Burian Jourdan, director of Prague based Vernon Gallery.
Interactiv Exhibition Interplanetary Constellation 2012 by Katja Loher in MuBE, Museum Brasileiro da Escultura

At the end of the journey through the ‘universe’ of Katha Loher the public comes across the Schachfeld/The Chess Board (2007), where they can watch a chess match played by a robot. Suddenly they realize things aren’t under control, the chess figures are as though they are alive. Chess reveals the relationship between those who rule and those who are ruled; they defend their class interests with the black and white figures and unite in their revolt against the king. But given the lack of experience in ruling and responsibility they cannot succeed at overthrowing the ruler. The chess board becomes a battlefield on which social contracts collapse, the pawns lose control, chaos ensues, and everyone involved is forced to look after themselves – if they still can.

Tomáš Prchal | Sanctuary | Vernon Projekt

3 September–13 October 2012
Tomáš Prchal (* 1988) is a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. From 3 September 2012 the unorthodox exhibition space Vernon Projekt, which allows passers-by to have a look inside the gallery all day long, will be hosting his installation Sanctuary, which provides viewers with the opportunity to uncover the relationship between the image and its place of origin.
The studio that Tomáš Prchal works in changes gradually into a sanctuary – a setting that supports his efforts and becomes part of the motivation behind a key to understanding the images. This installation gives viewers the opportunity to see roughly what the place where artists do their work looks like.
Will people be able to more effectively read the images if they have a chance to examine the place where they originated? Or does this experience on the contrary distract their attention and interfere in the regular perception process?
Prchal believes that visualisation of the studio can serve the public as a semiotic aid in reading images or, conversely, can be an auxiliary source of information for with which to read the painting. Naturally he also acknowledges the possibility of the very opposite situation, that an environment of any type, including the place where an image originated, will distract attention away from perceiving it directly.
‘I’m always fascinated at painters’ exhibitions if I get a chance to see the place where the paintings were created. For me, these places are the starting point of a great miracle, an absolutely sacred place into which few unfortunately take a look. The studio is transformed into an artefact that has a similar force of expression as the paintings that are created in it, so I see no reason why not to exhibit it too. I would above all at this point like to direct attention to the mutual relationship between the painting and the place in which it was created so that I can consciously interfere in the ordinary process in which they are perceived’, is how the artist, Tomáš Prchal, described his project.
How visitors will respond we can find out from 3 September 2012 at Vernon Projekt gallery.
BLACK & WHITE art - design - lifestyle

Vernon Gallery
21. 9.-7.10. 2012
Jindřich Halabala - UP Factory - Robert Slezák - Daniel Krejbich – Milan Knížák
Prague, 28. 8. 2012 – The exhibition Black & White, which will open on 21 September at Vernon Gallery in Prague, will present visitors with a show of Art Deco and Functionalist style furniture that embodies the best of the forgotten 1920s. Furniture from UP Factory, designed by architect Jindřich Halabala, and furniture from the Robert Slezák Company and Hynek Gottwald Company will be accompanied by works of art by contemporary artists Daniel Krejbich and Milan Knížák. This inter-genre exhibition combining design and art is being organised in cooperation with collector Pavel Feigl and Galerie 22.
Furniture is regarded as one of the most distinctive tangible reflections of the Art Deco style that has lasted to the present day. Simple, pure forms, harmonious proportions and refined decor, all done in black and white.
Furniture from UP Factory designed by architect Jindřich Halabala
The exhibition will present furniture from UP Factory, one of the most prominent producers of furniture in Czechoslovakia during the interwar First Republic producing work on a level comparable to the best of European work at that time. One of the most important figures working for UP Factory was Jindřich Halabala, who was initially the head of the company sales shop in Prague and later became the company’s chief designer. He not only designed furniture himself, he also took direct responsibility for the selection of stock and the promotion of products. Jindřich Halabala was instrumental in ensuring that quality products were able to reach a wide range of customers thanks to serial production.
Furniture from the Hynek Gottwald Company
The Hynek Gottwald Company, whose company symbol is the stylised signature of Gottwald, was built on the foundations of the company Lederer & Gottwald. It exported its products to South America and South Africa. Over time it transferred the production of metal furniture to various manufacturers in local industry, but in 1965 it closed definitively. The company however continues to function on the premises of the factory of the former Hynek Gottwald Company in Brandýs nad Orlicí (currently under the name C.I.E.B. Kahovec, spol. s r. o., Prague) and focuses on the production of spring seats for drivers and passengers.
Furniture from the Robert Slezák Company
The Robert Slezák Company was founded in 1908 in Bystřice pod Hostýnem. Initially it produced locksmith products and furniture and construction mountings, and later began to furnish the surfaces of its products with a galvanic surface of copper, nickel and chrome. In 1913 it began manufacturing metal chairs and brass furniture based on its own designs. In 1931 it introduced the licensed production of spring seats and sofas out of metal tubes. The designs for new models were produced internally and in cooperation with architects.
The furniture exhibition will be accompanied by art works by contemporary artists Daniel Krejbich and Milan Knížák
The furniture exhibition taking visitors back to the 1920s will be accompanied by works of art by Daniel Krejbich, who works extensively in figural art and landscape painting, and sculpture by Milan Knížák, a prominent Czech artist, musician and performer.
The inter-genre exhibition Black & White will also showcase the legendary Vespa scooters. The Vespa company was founded by businessman Enrico Piaggio in 1943 and since then the trademark has represented a fusion of a clean lifestyle and emotion.

The exhibition is curated by Monika Burian Jourdan, the director of Vernon Gallery. The exhibition is organised in cooperation with Gallery 22 and Art Deco Shop Prague. VERNISSAGE + VERNON TALK Thursday 1st November 2012 6 pm
Roni Ben Ari – LOOM | FATHER | REQUIEM
November 1, 2012 – January 31. 2013
“The sounds of the looms, the scents of the oils lubricating the machines, the dust…. have all become the memories of my childhood – the memory of my father's textile factory.” After the old factory disappeared she found the orphaned parts of the textile machine in an attic of a house in old Tel Aviv. She photographed them dusty as they were, against a white background. Of the many photographs she weaved a pattern by means of animation film, shot in stop motion technique. This film will be shown at the Vernon Gallery.
The artist will be present at the opening and she will answer the questions about her work.
