Petra Polifková (CZ)
Petra Polifková (1985) is a fourth-year student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (School of Painting I, Prof. J. Sopko). She is currently on a study exchange in Dresden at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden in the painting studio of Prof. P. Bömmels. She has been exhibiting work since 2006, when her worked was included in an exhibition of the School of Painting of Jiří Sopko in Wortner’s House in České Budějovice (Aleš South-Bohemian Gallery) and as part of the Contacts 06 project organised by Klatovy – Klenová Gallery. She also has her first shows behind her in Dresden and Zurich.
ALLEIN
Petra Polifková expresses herself through the medium of painting. For her, the autobiographic aspects of the work are important. She creates portraits of people from her circle of friends, paints places she knows well or has visited. In paintings from the past two years it is possible to apprehend a theme expressed in the title of the exhibition, for the artist evidently more aptly in German – ALLEIN (Alone).
This is not about solitude with negative attributes. It is more about the pilgrimage of an individual human through space, through the new places he or she discovers.
A cyclist is riding through the city, a girl is walking her dog down an empty street at night, but she can also been seen in the middle of a field, at a concert, in a studio, or in a bar. It is seemingly always the same figure, sometimes more and sometimes less resembling the author. Outside the weather and the seasons are changing, time is passing. The urban and natural frames gradually alternate and become just memories. Memory accompanied by the soft melancholy of diary entries.
