Uros Island, a lighting sculpture installation by multi-media artist, Grimanesa Amorós, will be part of the Collateral Event of the 54th International Venice Biennale. It will be installed on the floor of the L'Abbazia San Gregorio for the Future Pass Exhibition.
Uros Island was inspired by the Uros Islands
in Lake Titicaca, located southeast of Peru. They are floating islets made
entirely out of totora reeds, a sub species of the giant bulrush sedge. The
pre-Incan Uros, who live on forty-two self-fashioned floating islands in Lake
Titicaca, build everything out of this material - everything that ranges from
houses to boats to watch towers. Amorós created Uros Island to reflect the
natural elegance of sea foam and totora reeds. It will maintain the traditional
technique and shape of these islands. The sculpture will seemingly arise from
the ground as if it were one with the earth.

2007, Permanent Site-Specific Public Art Project
6 feet Height x 19 feet Width x 7 feet Depth
Location:New York, NY
Terrarium is a permanent, site-specific, public art project located at 54 N. Moore St., in Tribeca, New York City. The function of this 110 year-old building has changed over time, from a storage site to a grocery, from a dye firm to a drug company. Today it houses residential and commercial lofts. I want to create a piece that reflects the evolution of Tribeca, a neighborhood constantly in flux.

2009-2010, Lighting and Mix Media Sculpture
13 feet Height x 8 feet Width x 6 feet Depth
Location: tribeca ISSEY MIYAKE Headquarter New York, NY
Aurora is a Mix Media Lighting Installation. I found its original inspiration from the natural phenomenon of what is known as the Northern Lights.
Light is one of my primary materials because it creates presence without physicality. In many occasions, it can be easily taken for granted, since much of what humans perceive comes from light, yet even that which is apparent can be mysterious. I'm always looking for the instance when light, in its changing forms, makes us contemplate and experience an ordinary circumstance in a different way.
This project is sponsored by ISSEY MIYAKE.

2010, Site specific lighting sculpture installation
12 feet Width x 16 feet Length x 4 feet Depth
Location: Tapestry Harlem, New York City
Tapestries are hanging, multicolored, woven histories. In Tapiz, I am weaving the faces of 125th street together to represent a merging of past present and future. People from diverse backgrounds are converging in Harlem, which will generate a new cultural and economic renaissance.
NO LONGER EMPTY is an innovative project involving a group of artists and curators who are interested in exploring a new paradigm for making and presenting art. The joint venture team of Jonathan Rose Companies and Lettire Construction Corporation is developing Tapestry, a 12-story gateway residential building located at 245 East 124th street at the foot of the RFK Bridge in Manhattan.
This project is sponsored by No Longer Empty and El Museo Del Barrio.

2010, Outdoor site specific lighting sculpture installation
9 feet Height x 30 feet Width x 8 inches Depth
Location: Hot Art fair facade, Claramatte Parkhaus, Basel, Switzerland
The concept behind the piece LA RECOLECCION reflects the temporary gathering of art, collectors, galleries, and artists. I see the parking lot as a giant magical toy dispenser, and for some coins you can get your prize. The drawings are based on actual real coins, some of which are swiss francs.
The 5th edition of HOT ART fair in Basel, Switzerland will be held in a new venue: Claramatte Parkhaus, located right in the centre of town and walking distance from Art Basel.
This project is sponsored by Hot Art Basel and Jose Cuervo.

8 meters Width x 14 meters Length x 1 meter Depth
Location: Allure of the Seas cruise ship Turku, Finland
Racimo is a outdoor site specific lighting sculpture installation. Its final location will be on the underside of a bridge at Turku, Finland. Many of the domes are screened with drawings done by the artist of rotational irrigation vineyard in Peru. The hemispheres are illuminated with pixel-mapped LED nodes running on a programmed video sequence especially created for Racimo.
This project is sponsored by International Corporate Art, the art advisors for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines which commissioned Grimanesa Amorós to create artwork for the bridge on Central Park for Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. The curatorial vision for Allure of the Seas is “The Wonder of our World Cultures”.
