Vernon Projekt – Nikola Semotánová – Cikády
18. 8. 2010, Prague
Nikola Semotánová / CICADAS
2. 9.- 1. 10. 2010, (pre-opening 1.9.2010, 18.00), Vernon Projekt, Heřmanova 12, Prague 7
Nikola Semotánová (1976, Jindřichův Hradec)
Nikola Semotánová studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. She continues to work with jewellery and design, but she is now mainly a conceptual artist.
The themes and form of her work differ with each new project. However, present in all of her exhibitions is humankind and the reality of life. She nevertheless presents these themes in an entirely different light. She takes a new look at the objects and media we come into contact with every day, approaches them with new eyes, and searches for their hidden meanings. So in her work classic CDs become shiny rainbow design mirrors that we could place in an interior space just for enjoyment. The theme of death is reflected with detachment and a sense of playfulness in the web project Morior with the aid of ‘e-shop’, where you can add a new frame to the one you have. The horror of war and its immediate portrayal in the media are captured by her specially designed newspapers and original texts.
Nikola Semotánová is concerned with and touched by the world as it is. She grasps it in a personal way, reflects on it with a poetic playfulness and a designer’s vision, and with a deep-minded passion she reshapes it and passes it on....
Nikola Semotánová has exhibited work at several group exhibitions, such as at Školská 28 and at the castle mill in Jindřichův Hradec. Her independent exhibitions include The Surface of Dreams at Vyšehrad Gallery in 2007 and Fragments at AVOID Gallery in 2009. In 2009 and 2010 she successfully exhibited work in London (in 2009 – the exhibition Mind the Gap; Crypt gallery, in 2010 – the exhibition The Stones of Menace; Brutalist church St Paul Bow Common).
Since 2008 she has actively participated in the appearances of the group Kolouch’s Dream.
Cicadas
Travelling by train through the night somewhere. The coupe is cramped with tired travellers. The train slowly sets off and the foggy light of the light bulb become increasingly intense. Some unpleasant insect has flown in through the window. It sits on the ceiling and chirps – it’s an enormous cicada, and in a flicker it has started to give its own concert. A heaviness settles on the listeners, as though its flickering was drinking something from their lives. The unappreciative listeners slowly vacate the concert hall. The only refuge seems to be darkness.
What would it be like to encounter an entire swarm of cicadas? What would their group sonata sound like?
Nikola Semotánová is bringing an audiovisual installation to Vernon Projekt that will be buzzing in your ears for a long time to come.
